With the beginning
of Holy Week (which precedes Easter Day), Episcopalians and many other
Christians will experience a multitude of customs, practices, and traditions -
many of which date to the origins of the Christian Church. As overwhelming as
it may be at times, we may be assured that every symbol has meaning and
purpose. Our individual appreciation of and involvement in such sacred theatre
is a matter of personal aesthetics and devotional preferences. In all
instances, whether observed simply or with pageantry, the meanings behind and
within all Episcopal liturgies and ceremonials are based on profound historical
events that continue to impact human lives everywhere. If you are unsure about
the rationale of certain words or actions, please ask the clergy or the
organist.
