The Annunciation of Our Lord
is the commemoration of the angelic announcement to Mary that she was to be
God's human agent in giving birth to God's Word and Messiah. Placed on the
calendar nine months before Christmas, the Annunciation honors Mary's exemplary
acceptance of her vocation. Christians differ on whether the biblical account
of the Annunciation is intended as literal history or as allegory.
